Abstract

Introduction: Adherence to treatment is fundamental to the success of therapies in patients with chronic diseases. Despite this, people diagnosed with diabetes and hypertension may encounter barriers to adherence to medical recommendations.
Objective: To construct and determine the evidence of validity and reliability of a treatment adherence scale, based on the information, motivation and skills theory, aimed at patients with diabetes and hypertension.
Methods: The research was carried out in a sample of 444 patients between 40 and 64 years of age, with a diagnosis of diabetes and arterial hypertension. Evidence of content validity was analyzed by experts; finally, the internal structure was explored by exploratory factor analysis and reliability by ordinal alpha.
Results: The instrument presented evidence of content validity, Aiken V=1 (0.83-1). Factor analysis identified 6 factors, consistent with the theory: (F1) perceived information, (F2) family support strategy, (F3) motivation for physical exercise and diet, (F4) self-regulation strategy for treatment, (F5) strategy for health care, and (F6) motivation for pharmacological treatment. The reliability of the dimensions was higher than 0.70.
Conclusion: The treatment adherence scale in patients with diabetes and arterial hypertension shows evidence of adequate validity and reliability.
