Introduction: Rheumatic diseases are characterized by the presence of a sustained inflammatory process. They are considered a cause of functional disability and impairment of the perception of health-related quality of life. Objective: Describe the results of the application of probiotic supplementation in the control of the inflammatory process in patients with rheumatic diseases.
Methods: An observational and descriptive investigation was carried out in a series of cases of 62 adult patients diagnosed with rheumatic diseases. A nutritional intervention was applied for 10 months, with nutrition supplemented with foods rich in probiotics. Yogurt, miso and canned pickles were used. General characteristics and inflammation markers were studied as variables. The McNemar test was used to identify changes in the results of inflammatory markers.
Results: Average age of 48.74 years, with a predominance of the female sex (62.90%), the diagnosis of rheumatoid arthritis (53.22%) and with a time of evolution of the disease less than 5 years (41. 93%). He highlighted that after 9 months of probiotic supplementation, an increase in the percentage of patients with negative C-reactive protein, fibrinogen and normal erythrocyte sedimentation rate was identified.
Conclusions: The use of probiotics, according to their mechanism of action, favors the control of the local and systemic inflammatory process in patients with rheumatic diseases.
