Introduction: Joint manifestations constitute the main extraintestinal expression of inflammatory bowel diseases. Its importance focuses on the advantages it offers in terms of guidance and diagnostic confirmation of the disease. Objective: Describe the joint manifestations identified in patients with a confirmed diagnosis of inflammatory bowel disease.
Methods: Descriptive and cross-sectional research, which included 73 patients with a diagnosis of inflammatory bowel disease. 62 patients were selected who had in their medical records the complete information necessary for the research. An information collection form was used for data related to the study variables, which were general characteristics of the patients, characteristics of the disease, and joint manifestations.
Results: Average age of 48.73 years, with a predominance of patients between 40 and 49 years (41.93 %), female (62.90 %), of urban origin (77.42 %) and self-identified as white (45.16 %). 54.84 % of patients reported evolution time between 6 and 10 years. 74.19 % had at least one comorbidity associated with a predominance of arterial hypertension (45.65 %), hypothyroidism (30.43 %) and diabetes mellitus (23.91 %). In 43.55 % of the cases there was a history of the presence of joint manifestations, with a predominance of arthritis (29.63 %), arthralgia (25.93 %) and inflammatory low back pain (25.93 %).
Conclusions: The joint manifestations most frequently identified in patients with a confirmed diagnosis of inflammatory bowel disease were oligoarticular arthritis in the lower limbs, arthralgia in the hips, and acute inflammatory low back pain.
