Clinical-surgical characterization of patients operated on for surgical acute abdomen
Keywords:
acute abdomen, acute appendicitis, acute pancreatitis, general surgery.Abstract
Introduction: The interpretation of abdominal pain by the general surgeon is a real challenge, as this is a clinical situation that demands the greatest discernment, because the most catastrophic of intra-abdominal processes may be preceded by the most subtle symptoms and signs.
Objective: To characterize patients who underwent acute abdominal surgery.
Methods: A cross-sectional descriptive observational study was carried out in a total of 100 patients, using the following variables: Sex, age, skin complexion, definitive diagnosis, location of pain, complications, surgical procedure and discharge status. The information was processed in Microsoft Excel, for which absolute and relative frequencies were used.
Results: Female patients were predominant (60.0%) between the ages of 55 and 66 years (17.0%). White skin predominated (49.0%). In 33.0% of cases, abdominal pain was located in the right iliac fossa and the most frequent definitive diagnosis was acute appendicitis (23.0%). The most frequently performed surgical procedure was resection and anastomosis (20.0%). 78.0% of the total patients had no complications. There were 7 deaths.
Conclusions: The series studied is from the fifth to sixth decades of life, with a predominance of females and white skin. Acute appendicitis is the most frequent diagnosis, which represents a predominance of abdominal pain in the right iliac fossa and resection and anastomosis as the most frequently performed procedure.
