Abstract

Introduction: Shoulder pain is the third most common musculoskeletal presentation in primary care. It is associated with functional disability, psychological disorders and deterioration in quality of life.

Objective: To evaluate the effectiveness of platelet-rich plasma in the treatment of patients with non-traumatic painful shoulder.

Methods: Experimental study in patients with chronic musculoskeletal pain in the shoulder. The universe consisted of 197 patients and the simple random sample of 154. Two groups of 77 patients were formed: an experimental group that was infiltrated with platelet-rich plasma, a control group that was infiltrated with triamcinolone acetonide. The variables were: diagnosis, pain and functional capacity at 30 days, 3 months, 6 months and 12 months according to the American Shoulder and Elbow Surgeons.

Results: Most patients had subacromial bursitis, 48.0% in the experimental group, 53.2% in the control group. The evaluation in both the control and experimental groups improved progressively from the first month onwards. The Friedman statistical test rejects the null hypothesis in all the evaluations performed (p= 0.000), that is, the treatments improve pain and functional capacity in the groups.

Conclusions: The effectiveness of platelet-rich plasma and triamcinolone acetonide in the treatment of non-traumatic painful shoulder is similar, with improvement in pain and joint function.
