Therapeutic adherence of patients with arterial hypertension and retinal vein occlusion

Abstract

Introduction: The evaluation of therapeutic adherence in hypertensive patients is essential to identify, assess and correct the severity and progression of retinal vein occlusion as an ophthalmological complication.

Objective: Determine the level of therapeutic adherence of patients with arterial hypertension and retinal vein occlusion.

Methods: Descriptive, cross-sectional study of patients diagnosed with retinal vein occlusion and arterial hypertension, in the period from January to December 2022, in the Retina-Vitreous Service of the "Ramón Pando Ferrer" Cuban Institute of Ophthalmology. The Martín-Bayarre-Grau adherence questionnaire was applied. The sample was made up of 66 patients who met the selection criteria. The variable studied was therapeutic adherence, and was summarized by absolute and relative frequency, mean values and 95% confidence intervals.

Results: Partial therapeutic adherence predominated in 54.6% of patients. The patient's personal involvement component obtained favorable results. The practice of physical exercises and use of reminders turned out to be the indications least executed by patients and the relationship established between professionals and patients in the process of adherence to treatment (relational component) reflected an unfavorable doctor-patient interaction.

Conclusions: Therapeutic adherence in hypertensive patients with retinal vein occlusion is partial, associated to poor doctor-patient relationship and the insufficient practice of physical exercises.
