Forensic characterization of homicides that occurred in the southern area of the province of Ciego de Ávila

Introduction: Homicide is one of the most comprehensive and accurate indicators for measuring violence.
Objective: To characterize victims of homicides occurring in the southern area of Ciego de Ávila province, according to medicolegal variables.
Methods: A cross-sectional, descriptive, observational study was conducted with homicide victims from January 2022 to December 2024 in the southern area of Ciego de Ávila province. Twenty-nine victims were studied using the following variables: age, sex, municipality where the homicide occurred, methods used, and cause of death. Data were collected from the records archived at the provincial Forensic Medicine service. The results are presented in frequency tables.
Results: The age range of the victims was 36 to 55 years (44.82%); the highest number of homicides occurred in 2024, with 6 cases; males predominated (72.41%). The municipality with the highest homicide rate was Ciego de Ávila (65.52%). The most common method used was a bladed weapon (86.20%). Among the direct causes of death, acute anemia was the most prominent, accounting for 9 cases (31.03%).
Conclusions: The highest number of homicide victims occurred in 2024, with victims aged between 36 and 55 years, predominantly male.
