Introduction: Rheumatoid arthritis affects the perception of quality of life; palliative care is a tool to improve patients' health status.
Objective: To evaluate the palliative care applied to patients diagnosed with rheumatoid arthritis.
Methods: A quasi-experimental study was conducted in 65 patients diagnosed with rheumatoid arthritis of 10 years or more duration. General characteristics and perception of quality of life were identified using the Short Forms 36 questionnaire. A palliative care intervention was implemented for 12 months, and the overall results and those for each dimension were compared between the pre-test and post-test.
Results: Average age 62.84 years, predominance of female patients (86.15%), disease duration between 15 and 19 years (40.0%), with associated comorbidities (90.77%). Hypertension (49.15%), hypothyroidism (23.73%), and diabetes mellitus (18.64%) were the most prevalent conditions. The dimensions most affected during the pretest were physical functioning, bodily pain, and physical role.
Conclusions: The palliative care interventions improved patients' perception of their overall quality of life, with an emphasis on bodily pain, general health, and vitality.
