Effect of a mindfulness-based intervention on stress in adults
Keywords:
mindfulness, psychological stress, psychosocial intervention, mental healthAbstract
Background: Perceived stress is a major public health problem, associated with various physical and psychological impacts. In Mexico, its prevalence has significantly increased in recent years.
Objective: To evaluate the effect of a mindfulness-based intervention program on perceived stress levels in adults living.
Methods: A quasi-experimental design was used with an intervention group and a waitlist control group. The final sample consisted of 67 participants selected through convenience sampling. The Perceived Stress Scale (PSS-14) and the Mindful Attention Awareness Scale (MAAS) were applied, both showing high reliability. Pretest and posttest measurements were conducted, and repeated measures ANOVA was used for data analysis.
Results: A significant reduction in perceived stress levels (d = 1.24) and an increase in mindfulness (d = 0.69) were observed in the intervention group, while no significant changes were found in the control group.
Conclusions: The mindfulness-based intervention proved effective in reducing perceived stress and increasing mindfulness levels in adults. This suggests it is a replicable and accessible strategy to promote emotional wellbeing in community settings.
