Gerodontology in Cuba as a strategic discipline for healthy aging
Keywords:

Introduction: The increasing aging of the population in Cuba presents new challenges for the healthcare system and university education, especially regarding dental care for older adults and a preventive approach. Gerodontology emerges as a key discipline for optimizing the oral health and quality of life of this population group.
Objective: To analyze the current state of Gerodontology in the training and professional development of human resources, as an essential strategy for promoting healthy aging.
Opinion: Gerodontology, distinguished from Odontogeriatrics by its preventive and community-based approach, is essential for preserving the oral health and quality of life of older adults. Its integration into dental training and Cuban public policies is crucial for addressing the specific needs of this population; it strengthens interdisciplinarity, research, and community outreach, and constitutes a strategic pillar for achieving healthy aging.
Conclusions: Gerodontology, a strategic discipline for addressing aging in Cuba, promotes healthy habits and autonomy, but requires curriculum updates, continuous training, research, and an interdisciplinary approach to promote active and healthy aging.
