Validation of a mental health action protocol for children and adolescents convalescing from epidemics

Abstract

Introduction: Epidemics generate significant psychological repercussions on children, adolescents and their families, increasing psychopathological manifestations. In Cuba, there is no standardized protocol for action in children's mental health during epidemics, which limits the clinical response in these scenarios.

Objective: Validate an action protocol in children's mental health aimed at pediatric patients convalescing from epidemics and their families.

Methods: An investigation of technological development and innovation in Health Systems and Services was carried out between April 2023 and September 2024; 27 experts participated, selected using a competence coefficient (K), ultimately leaving 15. The protocol was designed based on methodological triangulation, bibliographic review and consultation of experts using the Delphi method. Variables of methodological quality, content validity, reliability and consensus were evaluated. Cronbach's α coefficient, Kendall's W coefficient and Content Validity Index (CVI) were applied.

Results: The protocol includes phases of initial evaluation, diagnosis, intervention and follow-up, with screening criteria, standardized psychological evaluation instruments and adapted psychotherapeutic strategies. The global CVI was 0.92, while Kendall's coefficient of agreement was 0.73 and Cronbach's α was 0.88, classifying internal consistency as excellent. The consensus among experts exceeded 70%, with the evaluation of “very adequate” predominating.

Conclusions: The validated protocol presents relevance, reliability and practical applicability in primary and secondary health care in Cuba, constituting an innovative tool for comprehensive care of children's mental health during epidemics.
