Implementation of ERAS guidelines of colorectal surgery

Introduction: Colorectal surgery presents metabolic and nutritional challenges that must be recognized for better management of surgical risk. The Enhanced Recovery After Surgery (ERS) protocol in perioperative care aims to reduce surgical stress and intraoperative organ dysfunction, and promote a satisfactory outcome. Currently, there is still stigma surrounding adherence to some of the protocol's guidelines in this type of surgery.
Objective: To evaluate the implementation of some of the ERS guidelines in patients undergoing colorectal surgery.
Method: A descriptive cross-sectional study was conducted, including 90 patients who underwent colorectal surgery between January 2024 and November 2025. The variables studied were: intake of clear liquids two hours before surgery, initiation of postoperative food intake, preoperative bowel preparation, anticoagulation, ambulation, and removal of bladder catheters postoperatively. For the analysis of qualitative variables, relative and absolute frequencies were used. Quantitative variables were expressed as mean and standard deviation.
Results: 80% of patients did not comply with the preoperative clear fluid intake; 45.6% of patients prepared their bowel with enema/laxatives. The other variables studied met the guidelines.
Conclusions: There are deficiencies in compliance with some guidelines of the ERS protocol in colorectal surgery.
