Introduction: Ankylosing spondylitis is a chronic, systemic inflammatory disease that affects the musculoskeletal system and limits joint mobility; rehabilitative exercise is considered the cornerstone of its treatment.
Objective: To identify the effectiveness of rehabilitation treatment in patients diagnosed with ankylosing spondylitis.
Methods: A literature review was conducted of documents published in scientific journals indexed in regional and high-impact databases (Scielo, Latindex, Redalyc, Scopus, PubMed, and Medline) between 2019 and 2024. Google Scholar was used as the search engine, with health descriptors in English, Spanish, and Portuguese to increase the volume of information, and Boolean operators (AND, OR, and NOT) to optimize the results. Seventy-nine documents were identified, of which 22 contributed information to the research.
Development: The study focused on analyzing the importance of rehabilitation in ankylosing spondylitis, identifying the most used rehabilitation treatment modalities, reviewing the existing evidence on clinical and functional efficacy, and examining the factors that may influence therapeutic success.
Conclusions: Rehabilitation treatment is an effective and necessary therapeutic strategy in the comprehensive management of patients diagnosed with ankylosing spondylitis. Its systematic and personalized application improves spinal mobility, reduces pain, and optimizes patient functionality, thus promoting independence and overall well-being.
