Introduction: Multiple sclerosis is a complex, autoimmune, demyelinating disease. In the sick person there are symptoms that limit the functional state, 75 % present loss of balance and gait disorders that condition an increase in the number of falls with the consequent complications that this generates for the general state of health.
Objective: To evaluate the results of a physiotherapeutic intervention to improve motor disability in patients with multiple sclerosis.
Methods: Applied research was carried out, which had a descriptive design. The universe was made up of 21 patients with a confirmed diagnosis of multiple sclerosis. A physiotherapy intervention was applied over a period of 10 months that included balance and gait as variables. The Wilcoxon signed rank test was used to compare the results of the pretest and posttest in relation to balance, step length and amplitude; as well as Cohen's d test to determine the effect size.
Results: Average age of 43.56 years (standard deviation of 15.44), predominance of the female sex (52.38%) and duration of the disease between 3 and 6 years (57.14%). During the pretest, patients with deficient muscle strength predominated (47.62%) and the average step length was 51.7 cm and amplitude was 23.4 cm. During the posttest all indicators improved.
Conclusions: The physiotherapeutic intervention applied in patients with multiple sclerosis improved balance and gait-related elements.
