Factors associated with HIV-syphilis coinfection
Keywords:

Introduction: Although evidence on HIV-syphilis coinfection and its associated factors has been documented, few studies have focused on this issue in the Latin American context. Objective: To determine the factors associated with the HIV-Syphilis confection.
Methods: Analytical, retrospective, observational, analytical, case-control study carried out in patients with HIV-syphilis coinfection treated at the Hospital II-2 Santa Rosa, Piura during the period 2012-2016, using a data collection form that evaluated sexual orientation, number of sexual partners, use of condoms, among others. Odds ratio and 95 % confidence intervals were estimated using simple logistic regression models. p-values < 0.05 were reported as statistically significant.
Results: Of 1002 patients treated for HIV (population), the median age was 34 years (interquartile range: 21-74 years). 56.3 % were male; 68.8 % did not use condoms and 37.5 % were homosexual; 31.3 % had between 4 to 6 sexual partners. The factors associated with a higher probability of HIV-syphilis confection were having between 7 to 9 number of sexual partners (OR: 4.00, 95 % CI: 0.86-24.92), not using condom (OR: 2.39, 95 % CI: 0.96-5.99) and homosexual orientation (OR: 2.92; 95 % CI: 1.04-8.52).
Conclusions: These data suggest that patients with HIV who have a greater number of sexual partners, do not use condoms, and have a homosexual sexual orientation are more likely to contract syphilis infection.
