Introduction: The Apgar test is the most used measurement to quickly determine the general health status of the newborn. Its result allows you to identify difficulties that can endanger your life. Objective: To identify the factors related to a low score on the Apgar test. Methods: Retrospective, field and descriptive research that had as its universe all the medical records of newborns with low Apgar test scores, born at the Hospital Provincial General Docente de Riobamba during the period 2016-2020. The sample was made up of a total of 429 medical records that were reviewed to obtain information on the general characteristics of the mothers, the pregnancy, and the newborns. Pearson's correlation test was used to identify the type of relationship between maternal age, number of prenatal check-ups, and gestational age with a low Apgar score.
Results: Among the main results, 34.20% of pregnant women with less than 3 prenatal check-ups, 25.18% of adolescent mothers and 19.71% of primiparous women stand out. 56.77% of pregnant women presented comorbidities with a predominance of overweight (44.35%). Low birth weight was the most frequent neonatal complication (66.14%).
Conclusions: The decrease in maternal age, the number of prenatal check-ups and the gestational age at the time of delivery are related to low Apgar scores.
