Effects of vaping on oral health
Keywords:
electronic cigarettes, electronic nicotine delivery systems, oral health, tobacco product, vaping.Abstract
Introduction: Cigarette smoking is one of the main risk factors for preventable mortality and morbidity in the world. Vaping is often thought to be less harmful to health than conventional cigarettes. However, this mistaken belief has led to a rapid increase in the use of these devices.
Objective: To review the effects caused by vaping on oral structures.
Methods: A search of scientific literature was conducted in 7 databases in December 2023, using as search descriptors: effects, electronic cigarette, electronic nicotine delivery systems, oral health, oral health in English and Spanish. A total of 153 articles were obtained, of which 48 were selected for providing relevant information for the purpose of this review.
Development: Periodontal disease affects the supporting dental tissues and can be exacerbated by vaping, which alters the oral microbiota and immune response, increasing the risk of periodontitis. Vaping also increases the risk of dental caries, xerostomia, oral candidiasis, alteration of dental aesthetics and can induce oral cancer. In addition, e-cigarettes can explode, causing serious oral injuries including dentoalveolar fractures, dislocations, avulsions, bruising among others.
Conclusions: Oral health is critical to a person's overall well-being, and vaping raises a number of concerns about this aspect. The scientific evidence presented supports the harmful effects that these devices have on the oral cavity, which can considerably affect the quality of life.
