Abstract

Introduction: Functional gastrointestinal disorders are common entities in children and adolescents worldwide and interfere with patient and family quality of life.
Objective: To determine the frequency of functional gastrointestinal disorders in pre-university adolescents.
Methods: Observational, descriptive, cross-sectional, descriptive study in 259 adolescents, belonging to the José Martí pre-university. The variables used were age, sex, skin phenotypic trait, personal history of dengue, first-born, separated parents, only child, prematurity and cesarean birth. The Pediatric Digestive Symptom Questionnaire, based on Rome IV criteria, was used. For statistical analysis, percentages, mean, Pearson's chi-square statistic and odds ratio were used. A 95% confidence interval and p< 0.05 were taken into account.
Results: A total of 78 (30.1%) adolescents, met the Rome IV diagnostic criteria for a functional gastrointestinal disorder. There was a predominance of adolescents aged 17 years (38.5%) and female sex (40.3%). Functional constipation was diagnosed in 14.3% of adolescents, followed by functional dyspepsia (12%).
Conclusions: The disorders most frequently found were functional abdominal pain and defecation disorders, including functional constipation and functional dyspepsia as the most diagnosed, with predominance in adolescents of female sex, black skin color and separated parents.
