Critical Pathways for the surgical patient
Keywords:
critical pathways, perioperative medicine, surgery.Abstract
Introduction: Clinical trajectories (CT) are tools used to guide evidence-based medical care. They translate clinical practice guideline recommendations into clinical processes of care within the unique culture and environment of a medical institution.
Objective: Describe a clinical trajectory for the high-risk surgical patient treated at the "Dr. Mario Muñoz Monroy Military Hospital".
Development: A clinical pathway is a structured multidisciplinary care plan with the following characteristics: (1) It is used to translate guidelines or evidence into local structures; (2) details the steps of a course of treatment or care in a plan, pathway, algorithm, guideline, protocol, or other "action inventory"; and (3) aims to standardize care for a specific clinical problem, procedure, or episode of care in a given population. A CT is described for surgical patients treated at the "Dr. Mario Muñoz Monroy Military Hospital", consisting of 8 moments.
Conclusions: The development and implementation of this CT improves the care process at each moment of truth that makes up the service cycle of high-risk surgical patients, improves the quality of medical care and reduces hospital costs
