Introduction: Peripheral arterial disease is caused by the presence of an obstruction in the arteries in the lower limbs. A series of factors that may influence the appearance and severity of this condition are described.
Objective: To characterize patients over 50 years of age with a diagnosis of peripheral arterial disease of the lower limbs.
Methods: A descriptive study was carried out in a series of 110 cases over 50 years of age with a diagnosis of peripheral arterial disease. The variables studied included the general characteristics of the subjects (age and sex), risk factors for the disease and its form of presentation; The data were obtained from the individual clinical histories of each patient.
Results: Average age of 64.39 years, predominance of male patients (61.82%) and presence of between 2 and 3 risk factors for chronic peripheral arterial disease (60.91%). Male sex (61.82%), smoking (70.00%) and dyslipidemia (90.00%) were identified as predominant risk factors. In 65.45% of the patients, intermittent claudication was the clinical presentation of the disease.
Conclusions: Being male, having several risk factors for the disease, and intermittent claudication as a presentation are frequently identified characteristics in patients treated with peripheral arterial disease of the lower limbs.
