Introduction: Self-efficacy in vaginal birth (VBAC) of the pregnant woman influences the choice of the type of delivery; therefore, it is a health indicator that requires constant monitoring with validated instruments.
Objective: To adapt and validate the self-efficacy scale for vaginal birth (SEVB) in a population of pregnant women in Peru.
Methods: Instrumental study in 298 pregnant women. The Self-Efficacy Regarding Vaginal Birth Scale (SEVB) was used and underwent conceptual validity and cross-cultural adaptation, pilot testing, evaluation of its metric properties and reliability analysis.
Results: A version with nine items grouped into a single general factor was confirmed, explaining 69.01% of the total variance and showing excellent model fit. The items reveal high discrimination indices, and the scale discriminates according to sociodemographic and obstetric variables. Predictive and convergent validity with the variable “prefers normal vaginal delivery” were adequate, as was internal consistency with various estimators.
Conclusions: The Peruvian version of the self-efficacy scale for vaginal delivery is valid and reliable for use with pregnant women. Its use is recommended in clinical practice and research.
