Introduction: Gastric cancer is a malignant neoplasm with multifactorial etiology and is the second leading cause of death from malignant tumors.
Objective: To characterize the epidemiological, clinical, endoscopic and histopathological profile of a group of patients with gastric adenocarcinoma.
Methods: A descriptive, retrospective study was conducted in 24 patients with gastric adenocarcinoma between January 2022 and December 2023. Epidemiological, clinical, anatomical, time-of-symptom onset, and pathological variables were studied. Absolute and relative frequencies were used as summary measures for data analysis.
Results: The mean age of patients was 65 years; 87.5% were older than 50 years. Eighteen (75%) were men and 14 (58.3%) were white. Helicobacter pylori infection was present in 83.3% of patients, and 7 (29.1%) were smokers; epigastric pain was present in 19 (79.1%) patients, and weight loss in 11 (45.8%) patients; 19 (79.1%) patients presented for consultation within one year of symptom onset. Tumors in the antrum and corpus were diagnosed in 7 (29.1%) patients; poorly differentiated adenocarcinoma in 14 (58.3%) patients, and intestinal adenocarcinoma in 14 (58.2%) patients.
Conclusions: Most patients with gastric adenocarcinoma are elderly men, with associations with Helicobacter pylori and smoking. The intestinal subtype is the most common, although differentiation varies according to geographic and individual factors.
