Introduction: Phacoemulsification is a refractive procedure. Surgery and intraocular lens calculation in myopic patients with cataracts present a challenge in achieving an ideal postoperative result.
Objective: To describe the refractive changes in myopic patients who underwent coaxial phacoemulsification.
Methods: A descriptive, retrospective study was conducted on 191 myopic eyes that underwent phacoemulsification. Demographic variables, type of degenerative lesions, visual acuity, and biometrics were studied. Summary measures were used for qualitative variables (frequencies), and for quantitative variables, the mean and standard deviation. The chi-square test of independence was used to identify associations between variables.
Results: The mean age was 65 ± 0.70 years; 52.4% were female. 34.6% of patients presented with pathological myopic fundus, and the most frequent alteration was lattice degeneration (14.1%). Axial length 25.79 mm; anterior chamber depth 3.46 mm; lens thickness 4.35 mm; steepest keratometry 43.60 D and flattest keratometry 42.4 D. Uncorrected visual acuity (UCVA) 0.10 ± 0.005; best visual acuity (BCVA) 0.78 ± 0.017 D; preoperative sphere -4.95 ± 0.272 D and postoperative -0.43 ± 0.007 D; preoperative cylinder -1.15 ± 0.086 D and postoperative -1.50 ± 0.078 D; The preoperative spherical equivalent was -5.68 ± 0.28 D and the postoperative spherical equivalent was -0.75 ± -0.039 D. Patients with myopic fundus abnormalities presented a greater average axial length (27.18 ± 0.26 mm).
Conclusions: These patients were primarily female with myopic eyes; postoperative improvement in uncorrected visual acuity and even better improvement in corrected visual acuity, as well as in the spherical equivalent, was achieved.
