Introduction: Gastric cancer, a malignant neoplasm of multifactorial etiology, has the fifth place in incidence and constitutes the second cause of death from malignant tumors. Objective: To characterize the distribution according to age and sex of the most common histological type of gastric cancer.
Methods: A descriptive and retrospective study was carried out. The database of biopsies performed at the "Dr. Carlos J. Finlay" Central Military Hospital between the years 2010-2020 was reviewed and patients diagnosed with gastric cancer were selected. The 157 registered patients with gastric cancer were included and analyzed the distribution according to age and sex of 145 patients with gastric adenocarcinoma.
Results: Gastric adenocarcinoma represented 92 % of all malignant stomach tumors, followed by lymphoma (5; 3%). The mean age was 67 years, with a predominance of patients 50 years or older (134; 92%). the male sex (84; 58%) was more affected than the female sex (61; 42%).
Conclusions: Gastric adenocarcinoma is characterized as the most frequent histological type of stomach cancer, predominantly in men and in those over 50 years of age.
