Attitude toward research and motivation to publish scientific articles in stomatology students

Introduction: Attitudes toward research and motivation to publish scientific articles are key components of health education. Student participation in scientific production in dentistry programs in Latin America remains limited due to the predominance of a clinical focus in educational programs.
Objective: To analyze the relationship between attitude towards research and motivation to publish articles in stomatology students.
Methods: An observational, analytical, cross-sectional study was carried out between September and October 2024. A total of 372 students from the III and X academic cycles, selected by means of a purposive sampling, participated. Two validated Likert-type scale instruments were applied to measure attitude towards research and motivation to publish articles. Nonparametric tests and ordinal logistic regression were used for statistical analysis.
Results: 50.8% reported a negative attitude toward research, and only 10.5% reported a positive attitude. Regarding motivation, 69.9% reported a moderate level, and 23.1% reported a high level. A significant association was found between attitude and motivation (p < 0.001). Furthermore, students with high motivation were up to 13 times more likely to have a favorable attitude toward research (OR = 13.03; 95% CI: 4.75–42.44; p < 0.001), although the wide confidence interval suggests caution in interpretation.
Conclusions: Motivation to publish was associated with a more favorable research attitude, highlighting the importance of fostering early strategies that promote student participation in research and academic production.
